WPL Academy Partners with Thrive Sport Performance

Author: Christian Keffel

Welcome Thrive SP!

WPL Academy is happy to announce we are partnering with Thrive Sport Performance to add a new mental skills program to our curriculum. This organization is led by Derrek Falor, who is the current Technical Director at ECFC. Derrek has a vast background in coaching at the collegiate level at Western Washington and Cleveland State, holds a USSF A license, and currently works with UW and SU soccer programs. He will be working with his new business partner, Lee Arakawa, who is an ex-college player and holds a PhD in Sport Psychology and Sociology. These unique mental-skill workshops will be specifically tailored to our players and families. We are excited to be adding sport psychology to our regular programming as we feel it will be very beneficial for the players, coaches and the parents!

This transition signifies our commitment to the success of our individual players and our dedication to helping young people to develop into successful, self-sufficient young adults who are prepared to be contributing members of their future campus communities. Our core mission has always been to help young people to develop and find their own path beyond high school. We have been extremely successful in helping players to find college programs that align with who they are. As Kayla, a ’23 grad and WPL Academy alum said about her new college program, “I feel like I have finally found my people! I wouldn't have known how to get there without the WPL Academy's help." Unlike most college scouting services, we help to guide our players to find programs that fit their unique personalities, rather than push players into programs where we have ‘connections’. We have helped to place student-athletes in colleges across the US at all levels, but beyond that, WPL Academy alumni have also gone to play and study in Germany, France, England, Scotland, Spain, Wales and Mexico! Rest assured, our programming will remain unchanged, with the same exceptional coaching staff, philosophy and program features that have made us successful. However, we will now have the opportunity to proudly represent the best that Washington has to offer wearing our own badge. With our new partner, Capelli, we will have access to additional showcase events and have lower expenses for our uniforms and equipment. Soon, you will get to see our new logo and colors, which truly capture the essence of our Academy. Through the end of our current Academy cycle at the end of July, we will continue wearing the Surf gear, but come August, we will transition to Capelli for the start of the new Academy year. Our mission remains the same – to provide you with the opportunity to play for your local club while benefiting from the supplemental training and unique opportunities offered by our Academy program. We have a proven track record of success, and we will continue to provide these invaluable experiences in the years to come. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements featuring our fresh new logo, colors and equipment sponsor. Along with that, we have a renewed commitment to our vision for what we do best: helping you develop to your highest potential, on and off the field. There is a lot of excitement ahead for our program, and we are honored to have you as members of our WPL Academy! -Erik Oman WPL Academy Director
